Guinness

Anyone who knows me well will understand that my favourite tipple is wine. I love red wine, I love white wine, I enjoy the odd glass of bubbly. I used to be in the industrial quantities league (in my thirties) but for the last few years I have been able to say that I stay well within my healthy number of units quota ( boring health stuff that the GP always nags about) without my tongue going black. Not because I care a fig for the government's need to scrutinize and nag about my intake, but because I just can't get through the stuff these days. One large glass and I am usually done.
However, looking forward to a glass of wine is still one of my true great pleasures. It is therefore pretty miserable that the chemo schedule has put me off the grapey stuff for the large part. Sometimes the thought of it makes we wince, other times I just feel ambivalent to the point of putting the kettle on instead.
So.... imagine my surprise yesterday when I was overwhelmed by a desperate urge for Guinness. I am not a beer drinker by any stretch of the imagine but all I could think about was...... It hadn't gone off by yesterday evening. I could not think of anything else! Eventually husband and teen set off to the supermarket in the village, returning with some tins. I had a half. It was nectar. It was heaven.I enjoyed every drop.
I am going to have another one tonight. I can't wait.
Apparently is is good for iron levels and is seen to be a tonic by some. Whatever works- bring it on

My mum used to have guinness and red wine for her iron levels when she was expecting me and my bro, back in the day. Ah those days before we were ruled by dietary and health advice (she smoked through both pregnancies as well).

guinness is good for you! guzzle away! I had a teeny glass of very hefty red on chemo days...sometimes not, as it would taste repulsive. But they do say that teatotallers suffer far more with side effects like nausea, than peeps who have the odd tipple.

One good thing for the ghastly chemo mouth is ice lollies - brilliant! I'd never liked them before, but during chemo I was the Ice Lolly Queen. Excellent if you get mouth ulcers too.

Yay you - Go Guinness Girl eheheh. And the husband and teen seem to make a good back up team too :o)

This cracked me up: "I used to be in the industrial quantities league"
I think it is great that you are craving something, you got what you wanted, and it made you feel better for a bit.
Glad to hear your men are taking good care of you Jo.

Yak! Can't think of anything worse. But you know what they say about a little bit of what you fancy.

You know - in Dublin when you give blood you are given a glass of guinness after to replenish your strength! Hoping treatment is going well. Irene

Nope, I just can't imagine craving Guinness! Hubster likes it and I sometimes braise steak in it but drink it? Mind you, having read what you and your other commenters have said maybe I should try it.

Wine would be my tipple of choice but I can't talk straight after one. In my 'Industrial Quants' years I could but then I got plenty of practice!

If you fancy a lighter version, Guinness shandy is nice too although there is a knack to pouring in the lemonade - you have to get rid of the fizz or it ends up all over the room!
Mmmmm I coukd just drink one now....

This is so funny! I am a red wine drinker - only started drinking alcohol at 40 - and don't like champagne nor most hard liquor, nor beer. BUT, I have discovered ONE beer that I just love, and have been craving it - and it's a dark beer, too! Isn't that a coincidence? It's a local microbrew called Fat Scotch Ale (by Silver City Brew Pub), and it's sweeter than Guinness, but has a lovely "kick."
By the way, if you have time between treatments, have you thought of reading about the Guinness family? They have quite a history. I only know about them through the Mitford connection, but still, it's interesting.

Hope you are feeling stronger each day.

Loved the photo of Seattle - it looks like that today!
